Question
My daughter has 2 dwarf winter whites which I bought for her in Oct 05.
They have always had fights but noting serious and always cuddle up after.
However, today, one has a wound on her tail?, signs of blood, I have seperated them for the moment but only have one large cage and one carry case to put the other into.
Do you think I should try to reintroduce them, when the wound has healed up, or it that it, no more cuddles for them both?, my 7 year old will be very sad if that's the case.

Answer
Dear Carol,
thank you for your question.
Dwarf hamsters are just as solitary as Syrian hamsters. They tend to live together more or less peacefully for the first few months, but when they reach an age of about eight months, the fighting starts - sometimes to the death. Dwarf hamsters can breed at an age of about four weeks, but they are not fully mature until they are eight-ten months old, depending on their species and the individual hamster. Even when there is no fighting and they share a nest ect., one hamster is always the dominant animal and it means stress for both of them to live in one cage.

Try looking for an old fish tank for the second hamster, at garage sales, in the ads or at pet shops (ask them for leaking tanks). Those make awesome hamster homes as long as they are no higher than wide to ensure proper ventilation. In my opinion, the minimum for a dwarf hamster is 30x20x20 inches long, wide and high.
I hope I was of some help to you
