New Dwarf Ham

Question
Hello, my wife and I recently brought home a male dwarf (our second dwarf; other passed away). He is 4 weeks old. We gave him a huge 20g tank, plenty of toys, aspen bedding, tissues to make a nest in his wooden house. We have fed him a seed mix of veggie only along with the mill pellets. His only treats are occasional sunflower seed or those little balls that are dried veggies and nuts all stuck together. My question is to his behavior so far. We have coaxed him out and handled him 1-2 times a day each day. He trusts us fine when we're handling him. He doesn't nip. We only handle him for about 5 minutes at a time because he gets scared. But, he doesn't hardly come out of his house/nest otherwise. He comes out a lot at 3am and zips back and forth from dust sand bowl to wheel almost OCD like every two seconds he jumps from one to the other. When we call him he still does not come out even though he seems to trust us when we handle him. (he poos when we handle him/scared?) Does this sound normal. Will it just take time? Our last dwarf was already 6mos so this is our first experience with one so young? Sorry so long, but i'm trying to give you all the variables on his living environment. Thanks!

Answer
Hi,
thank you for your question.
Your hamster enclosure sound great :) To me, the behaviour of your hamster sounds normal. After all, he has just been seperated from his sibling and mother and probably he's still scared and has to get used to his new surroundings. Try putting some clothes, maybe an old t-shirt, that have your smell into the cage.
All dwarf hamster I know poo when you handle them, it's just something they do.
I hope I was of some help to you
