Gerbils and ladders

Can gerbils climb ladders?  I am looking to expand my cage and am not sure if my gerbil will be able to climb the ladder and not fall through?

gerbils aren't really good at climbing. i would make steps for them.

sorry for such a late response. I was moving to another state and did not have internet for a few days. Generally the best type of material I would say would be metal, or wood since they can keep chewing on that and keep their teeth down at the same time. Plastic isn't good since if your gerbils are chewing up everything they may eat the plastic.
