My lovely gerbils

Dear Kelly,
I was wondering if there is something i shouldn't be feeding my gerbils. Some websites say yes and others say no...should i give them sunflower seeds or rabbit pellets?

Hi Stephanie,

Avoid rabbit pellets - they're way too high in fat.  Also, you can feed your gerbils sunflower seeds, but only in moderation, as they are also high in fat.  If your gerbil mix comes with sunflower seeds, pick them out, and then you can feed them to your gerbils as treats (one a day).

If you want to give your gerbils a treat, try plain Cheerios and Rice Krispies.  Also, you can occasionally give them a small piece of apple or carrot.  Remove any leftovers after 24 hours.
