hampster babies

Question
My husband bought my kids hampsters, which means they're now my hampsters, and one of them had babies.  I don't know how hampsters are with their young.  I would like to clean her cage, blood, urine etc., but I don't know how to handle the babies.  They are only 2 days old.  Thank You.  Allyson Williams

Answer
Hi Allyson,

congratulations on the babies!

Please do not disturb the babies or the cage or the mother at all for the first two weeks and do clean them out until they are about three weeks old!!

The mother will either destroy the babies or abandon them if she feels threatened so it is best to leave them alone for the first three weeks.

When they are three weeks old youcan handle them gently and they will get very tame too!

What kind of hamsters do you have?  Is the father still in the cage?  How old are the mother and father?  Are they from the same litter??  Please let me know.

Please let me know how you get on.

Kind Regards,

Tammy
