Question
What can gerbils chew on to help thier teeth?

Answer
Dear Mia,
thank you for your question.
Toilet paper rolls and egg containers are always big hits with gerbils, those usually don''t survive the night. You can also offer small bracnhes and twigs from trees if you have access to unsprayed trees. Hazel (including corkscrew), beech, birch, willow, poplar, oak, apple, pear, cherry and currant bushes are suitable for example. They can be offered with or without leaves. They can also chew on wooden toys like ladders or houses.

Millet spray is a good way to keep the gerbils entertained and they have to work hard to get all the small seeds out of their shells. You can also bake gerbil cookies: mix flour and water until you have a sticky dough, then add gerbil food and for example an egg or grated zucchini or carrot, dried flowers or herbs (parsley, rose, basil, cornflower, stinging nettles...). Form smallm cookies from the dough and bake them for about half an hour, depending on your oven. I always check on the cookies once every ten minutes, maybe turn them over. When the cookies are well dried out, you can store them in a cookie jar.
I hope I was of some help to you
Jennifer
