is this hamster dying?

Question
hi i am very new to this. I was left in charge of watching my nieces two hamsters. They were left in the garage of my house and for about a week  i forgot they were there. When I went to check on them after remembering, i saw that one was dead and the other had been eating off of it. now the living hamster has fresh food and fresh water but its acting weird.its eyes look completely shut, its movement has slow down tremendously, and when it moves around it sometimes topples over. I feel terrible because I've never taken care of a hamster before, i have 3 dogs and a 1 1/2 year old daughter, so i never really had time to take GOOD care of them. Is this hamster dying too?

Answer
You may be able to rest assured that the first hamster was not your fault. If the hamsters are syrians they are not supposed to be housed together in the first place, if they are they will fight one another over territory, usually resulting in ones death. If they gave you the hamsters together in one cage, then they didn't know this simple fact, and this was not your fault. Even if they were still young and tolerated each other just fine when they brought them to you, this is no excuse for housing 2 syrian hamsters together, as this sort of thing eventually happens.

The other hamster may just be a bit weak from not having fresh food, water, and bedding for a week. The fumes from 2 hamsters urine over a week can be pretty toxic, and may have caused the second hamsters condition. Second could be the heat, even though hamsters are desert animals, if your garage gets very hot, it would cause the hamster to act strangely. I would take the remaining hamster indoors, provide good ventilation, plenty of fresh food and water, and just wait, at this point besides a vet visit there is not much you can do.
