Do hamsters sweat?

21 11:34:10

Question
My friend bought me a dwarf hamster 3 days ago, and since it was a surprise, I don't really have anything for him/her to play with. I put random balls and empty water bottles for it to occupy itself with until I can find the time to get to the pet store. Anyway, it went in and out of the bottle with ease at first, but this morning, he/she got stuck and started panicking. He upper body got soaking wet, without any water being near...is it okay?

Answer
Dear Marie,
thank you for your question.
Hamsters do sweat when they are hot, but not very much and usually not when they are frightened. If her upper body was stuck in the bottle, I think it was probably caused by condensation.
It's better to use cardboard boxes as hamster toys, plastic can be deadly when chewed and swallowed. Toilet paper rolls also make good toys, as well as crumpled up unscented and unbleached toilet paper or newspaper with food hidden in it.
I hope I was of some help to you
