Black Bear Hamster Behavior

Question
I just acquired my black bear hamster about 10 hours or so ago.  He was doing fine in his "home" until I introduced a plastic wheel into it.  Once he figured it out he began to run and run.  Now, he continues to run furiously in it and every few seconds he leaps around and spasms, rolling around and kicking furiously then going back to his wheel.  I tried taking the wheel out but that just made him continue so eventually I put it back.  Is this normal?  I'm worried and not sure what to do.  I'm afraid for his health, he continues to give that wheel all he has then hops around like he's still angry.

Answer
Hey, Aaron.
This behavior is somewhat normal.  Some hamsters simply like their wheel more than others.  Also, since you just got him, just give him some time, and after a while he should calm down some.  For the mean time though, the excercise is actually good for his health, so there's nothing to worry about.

Hope this helps and good luck with your new hamster.  Best wishes.
