Our Hammie has grown a huge stomach suddenly

Question
Hello- We have had our long haired golden hamster for about nine months and he has been very active, happy and healthy until a few weeks ago. We noticed that he seemed to be getting fat and now he is so large on both sides of his stomach that he cannot go into his tubes and does not walk on his wheel. Even when I put him in his ball to get exercise, he just sits there and sleeps. He is eating, drinking, and still using the bathroom. The lumps inside of his stomach are very hard and are growing very rapidly, yet he is making no noises like squeaking etc.  I am so afraid he is in pain and my kids might find him exploded the next time they check on him. Is this common and what is your advice on what to do? Can he be saved? Thanks for your help!

Answer
Hi Jenny,

I would defnitely take him to the vet ASAP. It seems your hamster may have developed an internal cancerous tumor. This may be able to be treated but your best bet is to bring him in. They can better diagnose and/or treat the problem. I hope everything works out for you. GOOD LUCK!

Sam
