Question
Dear Kelly,
why does my hamster bite other people? I have noticed this alot latly.
Also I put chew sticks in the cage and she chew on them. When I opend the cage she was a little scared  and she kind of got in battle mode. what do I do about that.
I'm a first time hamster owner so any other advice you have for me would be great too!

     Yours Truely,
     Juan
P.S. shes a syrian hamster

Answer
Hi Juan,

Hamsters tend to bite people when they're nervous.  And, if your hamster is being handled by someone he's not familiar with, he'll naturally be nervous, and he may bite.  You might want to let people who handle your hamster wear gloves, to make them feel more comfortable.  Also, make sure that they're being gentle with the hamster (not squeezing him or making sudden movements and loud noises).

Since hamsters' teeth are always growing, continue giving your hamster chew sticks.  And, as for her being scared when you open the cage - make sure that she sees your hand before you suddenly stick it in the cage.  Let her smell your hand so that she'll recognize you, and she won't be so anxious.  Never grab her suddenly, or wake her up suddenly.  These actions will make her defensive.

Here's a link to a website which is very informative, especially for new hamster owners:
