Question
ok now my hasmter has been with me for about 2 weeks and she is a little evil devil. BUT she used eat the sun flower seeds right from my hand. she made a hollow nest and gained quite a bit of weight. she seems to fit your discription of a pregnant hamster, but i am not sure. i really would like her to have them though.  do you recomend a good way to introduce a male to a female.  thank SOOO much.

Answer
Hi Eileen,

Well, the gestation period is 16 days, so if your hamster is pregnant, she should have the babies soon.  If she's not pregnant, and you want to mate her, make sure she is at least 4-6 months old.  There is quite a bit of information on how to mate Syrian hamsters.  Here's a link to a page that has everything:

Keep in mind, however, that once the babies are ready to leave their mother (when they are 3 weeks old), they will have to be placed in separate cages, according to gender, one for males and one for females.  Then, after 2-3 weeks, they will each need their own cage.  Before you decide to breed your hamster, make sure you either have enough cages or know people who want hamsters.  Don't depend on pet stores, as they will usually have regular breeders who bring in their hamsters.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.
