One eye closed during day

Question
My daughter just got a Teddy Bear hampster (Fluffy). The store said it was about 10wks old.  We noticed that the left eye is near shut during the day and does not fully open until later in the evening.  The right eye will open up (at times during the day).  Is this normal?  No discharge is noticed and both eyes appear similar at night.

Answer
Hi John,

Yes, this is normal. Generally the hamster will get it open by it's self. As long as there are no signs of infection (redness, discharge, pus or swelling), there isn't anything to worry about.
Sometimes their eye or eyes will get matted (even though you might not be able to see it). If the hamster has trouble getting their eye/s open by themselves, the best thing to do is wet a Q-tip and gently rub it over the eye/s from outside corner to nose. Repeat this until the eye opens. Never try to pry open the eyelids, as a hamsters eyelids are delicate and will tear easily.
