-----Question-----
i bought my hamster about 2 months ago. she's very healthy, eats, drinks, plays normally. i found out about 2 weeks ago when i looked into her cloudy not really even open eye, that shes blind in one eye. today i picked her up to clean her eye, and noticed fur missing on her hind leg, and throat. shes always been a scratcher since the day i bought her. i'm very worried and dont know what to do besides call the vet. but, i wanted an opinion on what someone may think it could be. help!? please.

Hi Allison,

A blind eye is really nothing to worry about.  Hamsters have poor eyesight even when they have 2 healthy eyes, and they primarily rely on their sense of smell.

As far as the scratching and fur loss, your hamster may have mites or allergies.  Many allergies are caused by the hamster's bedding.  Pine and Cedar beddings cause skin allergies, as well as respiratory infections.  If you use Pine or Cedar, switch to Aspen or Carefresh, which are both safe beddings.

If you use Aspen or Carefresh bedding, and your hamster still scratches, she may have mites.  If you have other indoor animals, first make sure they're mite-free.  And, buy anti-mite spray for small animals at the pet store.  Spray your hamster's body, and shield her head while you're spraying.  Then, clean the cage and spray it with the anti-mite spray as well.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask :)

Hi Allison,

Many female hamsters bleed a little from their vagina once or twice in their lifetime.  However, if your hamster is bleeding more than a little, then she'll need to go to the vet.  More than likely, she has a urinary infection, which will need to be treated as soon as possible.

I hope she's better soon!

Answer
Hi Allison,

Whoops, it seems like I answered this question in my other response.  Like I said, try to keep her comfortable by giving her plenty of extra bedding and making sure her food and water are near.

As far as the vet, I would highly encourage you to call your vet and explain your situation.  Tell them that you're very worried about your hamster and that you'll pay what you can, but you don't have much.   (I've had to do that, and my vet was very willing to work with me.)  Once again, I really hope everything turns out okay for you and your hamster.
