Question
We have had our syrian hamster for about 6 months and recently he has started to wee in his bedding area is this normal.  Also should I change his bedding everyday to keep his as dry as possible?

Answer
Hi Alison,

Yes, this is normal.  You have a couple of choices:

1. You can choose to change his bedding every day, since his bedding area should be kept dry.

or

2. You can potty-train your hamster.  (This is what I'd do.)  Buy either hamster litter or *unscented* cat litter.  Place a generous amount of litter in a different area of the cage, preferably a corner, since that's where hamsters tend to use the bathroom.  Then, with a plastic spoon or something like that, scoop up some soiled bedding (with urine on it) and droppings, and place it in the litter.  This will let your hamster know that he should use the bathroom here.  You may have to repeat this process a few times, but your hamster should soon get the hang of it.  Once he starts using the litter, be sure to change the litter every 2-3 days.

Have a great weekend!
