QUESTION: Hi can you help my Chinese dwarf hamster had 4 babies 2 weeks ago she was fine at first but now every time any of the babies go near her she fights and squeals, also she keeps rubbing and scratching her belly

ANSWER: Hi,

i'm really sorry but i'm not sure what is wrong with her.

i think it would be best if you took her to the vets.

It sounds as if it could be something to do with her milk teats.

QUESTION: Hi Tammy, I decided to separate the babies from there mum as they were coming up to 3 weeks old i then bathed her tummy with saline solution for a couple of days by the 3rd day the scratching stopped and she gave birth to 6 more babies,i guess i didn't seperate mum and dad quick enough we now have 14 hamsters. thanks for your help regards, Karen

Hi Karen,

i am glad the mother is better now.

You should feed the babies some made up 'ready brek' to give them some of the things they are missing from their mothers milk.

The Mother will come into season on the day she has a new litter, so if the Father was present at the birth of this new litter then the mother is probably pregnant again!
