Is she dying , suffering?

Question
Hi,

We have a honey bear hamster and she is about one year and a half.
My boyfriend changed her cage last night, seeing that she was wobbling around, barely opening her eyes and wanted to bite him when picked up.
Since we are on a tight budget, I was wondering if a vet could help or should we just put her to sleep?
I don't want her to suffer.
Thank you so much.

Answer
Hi,
I understand how difficult it must be for you, but please don't attempt to put her to sleep yourself. It will cause her even more pain and distress. Take her to the vet, and ask what they think. If they cannot find anything immediately, they will probably want to do expensive tests to figure out what is wrong, which may not be suitable for you. They should give you the option to put her to sleep if you cannot afford this and you think she is suffering. Until you can go the the vet, keep her warm, give her plenty bedding, food, and most importantly, fresh water, and keep her cage away from loud noises and extremes of temperature.
If, by the time you take her to the vet, she cannot walk or has stopped eating or drinking, the best option would be for the vet to put her to sleepm, and put her out of her pain and misery. At least you will have the knowledge that she had a very good life, if it comes to that.

I hope very much she survives,
Kathryn
