My hamster is dragging back legs.

Question
I have two dwarf hamsters that I have had for a little over six months.  Today I noticed one of them crawling around the cage funny.  It is dragging both of its back legs and is unable to crawl up the tubes.  It is normally a very active little hamster.  I can't tell if it is in pain or not, and I don't know of anything that could have happened to it.  We have been out of the house most of the weekend, so I know one of my kids didn't hurt him.  What could have caused this?  Is there anything I can do for it?  Thanks!

Answer
hi gloria,

it sounds like your hamster is has either, broken his back (this can happen if they fall from a height in their cage, landing on something awkward), a stroke, or he is suffering from cage paralysis. cage paralysis is when a hamster does not have enough room in the cage to excersize propperly. only a vet will be able to tell you what has happened here, and unfortunately will ask to put the hamster to sleep :(

best of luck with than and thank you for your question, if theres anything else please ask. and do let me know how you get on.

p.s. your hamster may have problems reaching the water bottle, place some water in a tiny bowl for him to drink out of, changing it daily. also hand feed him until you can see a vet.
