Question
My hamster died on sunday night but i want to Know how. She was just 1 year old and I've had others to live to 2 years old. I went up to feed her on sunday. i would feed her a mash made of weetabix, cornflakes, oats, a tea spoon of milk & water. i would drain it so it would stick together. i would also add vitemin drops to her food and water it said to give 27 drops per day but i would only give her 20 per day, 2 in her food and 9 in each water bottle. i would only give the mash cause she would not eat anything else. i also changed her cage sawdust to sawdust pelletts called beautipet cause they did not have sawdust flakes in the shop. the bag said that they were sutible for hamsters, gerbils, rabbits, guinne pigs, and other small animals.it also said that they were naturally pine fresh, biodegradable, dust free, and ultra absorbent. When i went up to her on sunday night she was cold and limp my dad tried to warm her up and woke up making chewing movements with her mouth and about 5 minutes later she died. my dad thinks she ate 1 of the pelletts and cause it was ultra absorbant it soaked up the things she ate but i would like expert addvice plese help im very up set and i would be very grateful if you could respond as soon as possibe thank you very much emer lawlor aged 13 years old.

Answer
Hey, Emer.
I'm sorry to hear about your loss.  And yes, you're right.  It sounds to me like the only thing that could have caused this was the bedding.  The way she was making chewing movements with her mouth when she was awaken makes me almost 100% certain that the bedding was the cause.  I don't think it necessarily soaked up the things she ate, but instead:  the bedding probably caused some type of blockage in her stomach/intestines, which in turn, caused an internal infection that led to her death.
Again, I'm sorry to hear about your hamster, and I hope I helped out some.  Best wishes.
