Syrian missing foot

Question
I just bought a baby Syrian hamster from the petstore.  The store said that he
has just been weened.  It took about five hours but we relized that he is
missing it's left hind foot.  It took that long because he moves around
perfectly fine, absolutely loves his wheeland ball, can climb the tubes, prefers
to climb the wires to get to the second level, and likes to jump off the second
level.  When I looked at it closely, it looks pretty well healed.  There is
however a little scab above the nubb on his leg.  He cleans his nubb and
even tries scratching with it.  I just wanted to know if he should be looked at
by a vet, will the wheel bother his nubb, and will there be any problems as
he grows?  Thank you.

Answer
The missing foot is likely due to genetics and not because something else took it off. Pet store hamsters are usually kept in one huge tank where they can inbreed to their hearts content. This produces hamsters with missing limbs, as you've come across, and a host of other problems. If the missing foot isn't giving him trouble, it's not worth a vet trip. Make sure the area doesn't become red or swollen, which would indicate an infection. Other then that he should be perfectly healthy with 3 feet.
