Question
Hello, I am starting to set up my own hamster tank its a 29 gallon and am still in the process of buying all my supplies for my hamster that I plan to get on my birthday. (I am really excited) My question is about their place to go to the bathroom. I have seen in the pet stores, potty litter and a litter pan for hamsters. I am not quite sure if I get these two items that the hamster will ever use them. Do you think that it will. I ask this because if it would mean not changing the bedding so much around his potty area then it would be helpful. I do understand that they don't need that but if he will use it then maybe it would be better for him and myself. Thank you for your time.

Answer
Potty containers work on the principle that a hamster will choose one corner of the cage for urination. The idea is that you stick the potty in that corner, and the hamster will just use it. Not all hamsters will however, there is no "training" involved, it's all up to chance. I wouldn't recommend them, since if your hamster doesn't use it, your out money. Also notice I said urination and not feces. Hamsters don't usually pick a single corner for that. If you notice your hamster having a clear cut single corner for urination you can try a potty, just know it isn't necessary.
