Hamster w/ enlarged scrotum

Question
Our hamster's scrotum became enlarged last evening for no apparent reason.  THis morning it is still enlarged.  Do you have any idea why this would happen?  He wasn't dropped or injured at all (to our knowledge).  He appears normal other than that.  Eating well, drinking, normal stools and urine.  We are wondering if we should take him to the vets or if this is a normal occurance for a male syberian hamster

Answer
Hi Cathie,

If you have a younger male hamster, his scrotum has probably just dropped. In my experience this nomally happens when they are around 4-5 months old and they will change is size if they get cold (get smaller) or if they get warm (get bigger).

There is Testicular Tumors (A firm enlargement of the testicles) but this is more frequently found in older males and the only effective cure is castration. But being they became enlarged over night I really doubt it is from tumors.

Since he is eating and drinking well and his stool and urine are normal, I would suggest just keeping a close eye on the area and if it becomes even larger, reddish (inflamed), very hard to the touch, blood in the urine, or he seems to be less active and not eating well, then take him to the vet.
