Experimental Hamster Terrarium

Question
It is my intention to develop an experimental terrarium for my next hamster, which will be a black bear hamster, and i have thought to use a ten gallon aquarium with a wire cage high-rise on the top.  This is not so strange, what i wish to know is if there is a real and present danger to the hamster if I were to use the aquarium to plant a garden for the hamster by filling half of it with clean dirt and planting wheat grass and clover there.  should i have to worry about humidity levels and other concerns? I feel that this environment would be closer to a natural rodent environment and should be alright so long as the nest was located in the upper, dry cage region of the terrarium.

Answer
As much as a fun idea that sounds, I would highly recomend that you don't do it, at least not all of it. Hamsters are actually desert dwelling rodents from Syria, with dwarves comming from China and colder climates in Russia. They wouldn't fare well with dirt burrowing wise, and health wise. Domesticated hamsters wouldn't be able to tolerate the dirt messing with their fur and getting in their eyes (they are extremely clean rodents, and dirt in their fur would stress them out). The 2 story part is the great part of that idea, it would give your hamster a variety of places to explore. I have a 10 gallon as well with an upper addition of tubes and housing, and he spends 90% of his time in the above dwelling.
