is our hamster mad?

Question
Hi there,
my daughter chose a syrian hamster last thursday for her birthday. We have been told by the pet shop that she is around 8 weeks old. Unlike any hamster we have looked after previously ( holiday cover for friends) this one seems excessively aggressive. I am aware that she has probably not been handled much until now but even trying to get her gradually used to us has resulted in numerous deep bites. She also has a tendency to hiss as soon as we approach the cage let alone attempt to touch her. I appreciate she's probably frightened stiff but should she be this! aggressive ( bearing in mind my daughter is only seven and now quite scared!)? Or should we go back to the petshop to replace her? ( which other hamster loving friends have suggested?) Your advice will be greatly appreciated. Tina

Answer
Hi Tina,

Well, if the hamster's owner were an adult and had the patience to try and tame her, I would suggest you keep the hamster and work hard at taming it.  However, since this is your young daughter's hamster, I'd suggest that you take it back to the pet shop and pick another.

Have a great day!
