Question
Hello!  My panda hamster (I Think) is sick.  he was peeing this thick yellow liquid (What I think is Diarreh) and He was Throwing up. (clear)  What should I do?  Is it the lettace I fed him?  Help

Answer
Hi Brianna

Hamster pee is a strange color and thick yellow liquid sounds pretty normal.  If it is diarrhea, then he is likely to have a wet and dirty rear end.  Diarrhea is deadly in hamsters and does need sorting out quickly.  If you think it is this, then you need to give him some probiotic and oral rehydration (I can give you more information on this if necessary).

I don't understand what you mean about him 'throwing up' as I wasn't aware hamsters can do this.  Are you sure his teeth are OK?  Is this saliva that you are seeing?  If they have overgrown teeth or dental problems this can sometimes cause them to dribble. In which case this matter would need sorting out.  Some hamsters just seem to dribble for no real reason and their chin/throat is often wet.

Lettuce can cause diarrhea and therefore it is advisable not to give this very often.  If you give cabbage, spinach, corn on the cob, broccoli, peas or apple - and alternate them, this would give him a more balanced diet.  I'm assuming you are also providing him with the hamster dry mix on a daily basis too.

I hope this helps.
