Question
QUESTION: i have 3 adult and 4 baby winter white russian hamsters and home .
i also separate them in different hamster cages .
recently , i clean their cage and realized there wasn't enough cage for them .
i tried putting the mother hamster with another girl hamsters of mine .
the min i put her inside , they started to fight .
i took her out and saw that she was bleeding at the bottom.
my maid suggested she might be giving birth again , but I'm not really sure . what should i do ?

ANSWER: Hi Xinyu,

It sounds like the blood is from the fighting.  Anytime hamsters fight, and you see blood, they need to be separated immediately.  You'll need another cage.  Also, when Dwarf hamsters have been apart for even a week, they'll fight when they get back together.  So, Dwarves have to grow up together to be able to get along.

QUESTION: if i wanna put the hamster back together do i have to exchange their bedding to let them get use to the smell ?

ANSWER: Hi Xinyu,

Actually, you won't be able to put the hamsters back together if they've been apart for longer than a week.  If your hamsters have been apart for only a few days, you'll need to use the split-cage method: Get some sort of screen and place it in the cage (so that the cage is divided in two).  Then, place the hamsters on opposite sides of each other.  Let them live this way for about 2 days.  Once you've determined that there is no animosity, then you can remove the screen.  (If you do see that there is animosity, however, they'll need to be kept in separate cages.)  Before you put the screen in the cage, clean the cage thoroughly so no hamster scent is in it.

QUESTION: one of my hamsters gave birth . should i put the father hamster with the babies or should i separete them ?
please reply ASAP ! :D
thank you (:
ANSWER: Hi Xinyu,

Has the father hamster been living with the mother?  If so, then you can leave the father in the cage - he will help raise the babies.

If the father has already been moved from the mother's cage, then you shouldn't put him back in the cage.  Also, if you don't want your hamster to have any more babies, you should put the father in another cage.

Good luck with your new arrivals, and remember, don't touch the babies until they are 3 weeks old.

QUESTION: sorry to bother you once again , wont the father eat the babies up ? cos he is quite violent and naughty .
when can i clean the cage cos i want to let the babies get use to the smell of their parents :D
and can i put the babies of different parents together ?

Answer
Hi Xinyu,

Well, since the father is violent, he should not be placed in the cage with the babies.  Just to be on the safe side.

You can clean the cage when the babies are 2 weeks old.  On my previous answer, I told you not to touch the babies until they are 3 weeks old; I actually meant 2 weeks old.  Sorry about that!  Once the babies are 2 weeks old, you can start handling them gently for short periods at a time.  And, since you can handle them, you can move them to a different container so you can clean their cage.

No, you shouldn't put the babies of different parents together.  Trust me, that would create havoc!
