Question
ok, i have one female gerbil. her mother died a few days ago. would it be a good idea to get a companion for my currant gerbil? she seems very lonley, and less active since her mother died. what i need to know is, will it be a good idea to get another female gerbil? will they fight? how long will it take them to get used to each other? and how will i be able to help them get to know each other.

Answer
If you want to get another gerbil than that can be a good idea. Just be prepared for them to fight in case they don't get along. Get a young female gerbil. Older gerbils seem to tolerate younger gerbils better. Clean out the cage that both gerbils will be in. You want to get rid of any territorial smells and everything.
Do you have a place where you can introduce both gerbils that is not inside the cage? Sometimes it's best to place the new gerbils in a completely different setting that way they haven't established any type of boundaries or territories, it will be neutral ground. If they seem to get along then I would place them both in the cage and see how they get along there as well. It can take a few minutes or a few days for them to get along and sometimes they may never get along.
I hope you are not confused by anything I have said, if you are I can always explain more.
