Question
I just got my daughters Syrian hamster 5 days ago. Since then it has had diarrhea. My daughter is very worried about it but i don't know what i should do for it or why it has diarrhea. it has water and food and its been drinking and eating. But its not on it wheel and its always sleeping when our other hamster is up. The pet shop i went to has a 15 day warranty should i bring it back?

Answer
This is a major problem with pet store hamsters. Your ham may have a disease called wet tail, which is usually caused by stress and diet problems. I went into Petco a few weeks ago to find a new female, only to have the one I picked have wet tail. They gave her medication for it, and that was the last I heard of her, after promising me I could purchase the hamster once she got well. The hamster most likely died, as wet tail is a fast killer. Wet tail can usually be seen as the hamsters lower section looking wet, and sometimes poo covered. Also the hamster may neglect grooming and have unkempt hair. Activity is a good sign, although the female I wanted with wet tail was quite active too. If you got it at Petco, they may help you with getting the hamster help, but for any other store, I would return it if you can confirm it has wet tail.
