Broken Pelvis

Question
My son's hamster became stuck in the couch.  The kids pulled him free and put him back in his cage.  I found him in tough shape.  When he crawls, he drags his rear legs.  I suspect a broken pelvis. I cannot feel a back injury or broken leg.  I cannot find any info on how to treat this, but I have read that some hamsters recover from this.  Please let me know if we can do anything for our buddy, Rocket.  He is very special to us.

Answer
Hi Daryn,

You're right, hamsters can recover from broken bones.  Because of their size, they cannot have a "cast" or anything like that, so the bone must heal on its own.  However, if you can see any bone sticking through, you'll need to take Rocket to the vet, as infection will most likely set in.

Also, Rocket may be in shock; if he's in shock, he will be limp and quiet.  However, even if he's not in shock, I would still advise you to call your vet.  (I say "call" because your vet can tell you if he can do anything, and if he can't, you won't be out any money.)

I hope the little guy will be okay!

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask :)
