Housing hamsters together

Question
My youngest daughter just got a fancy hamster who is probably only 2-3 weeks old and it is a female.  My older daughter just got a Teddy Bear hamster who is also female, but is older.  I know from reading that we can not put them together now, but I was curious if they could eventually live together when the little one gets older and if they can, how long do we have to wait?

Answer
hi mom!,

im sorry but these hamsters should never be put in the same cage, hamsters of different breeds ie. teddy bear, dwarf etc can be very intolerant of their own kind never mind a different one. also you mention that your older hamster is a teddy bear and these breeds are not known to enjoy companionship, they are very much much the loner of the hamster world, very territorial and aggressive towards other hamsters (they are the best breed to get however, if you want to be able to handle them, they just dont like other hamsters lol). if you wanted to keep hamsters as a group, any breed of dwarf hamster is the best to get, although they are not fond of human company when in groups.

to round this up, if you put a your baby hamster in with your teddy bear one, the teddy bear will almost certainly fight and kill it.

thank you do much for your question and if you need to ask again, please do! let me know how you get on :)
