Syrian Hamster Health

Question
I have a male Syrian Hamster, aged approx 7 months, named Bruce.
He appears well nourished and active.
Recently I have noticed a lump on his bottom near to his tail. The lump is soft/squidgy to the touch and it doesn't seem to bother him when pressed/touched.
Also I have noticed that his testicles seem to be larger than they were previously.  It appears that this has made his rear wobble when he walks.
My Hamster is very important to me and I would like to ensure his health and happiness.
I would be grateful if you could let me know if this is normal or if I should worry about this.
Thankyou in advance for any assistance you can give.

Best Regards  Keith Crowley

Answer
Hi Keith,

Your hamster may have either an abscess or a tumor.  An abscess is an infection resulting from a bite or scratch.  Since the abscess will eventually burst and become infected, your hamster will need to go to the vet so the abscess can be drained.  Your vet may also prescribe antibiotics.

Or, the lump could be a tumor.  If a tumor is caught early enough, it can be operated on.  In this case as well, you should take your hamster to the vet for a diagnosis and treatment.

As far as the testicles - Male hamsters' testicles actually appear larger as they age, often dragging the ground.  This is normal for hamsters over the age of 1 year.  However, since your hamster is still young, the testicles may be swollen - possibly from an infection.  Again, you would need to take your hamster to the vet.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask :)
