Recovering Gerbil & Diet?

Question
My two year old male gerbil got terribly sick. I bought some over the counter antibotics, (for Birds) Of course, the store said I could use this for the gerbils. It's one of the tetracycline family antibotics.

He's recovering, but he's not able to eat yet. He drinks enough water with the antibotics. I don't know what to give him except oatmeal or raisins. He's recovering from either a cold or respiratory infection. This is the first time I had a gerbil survive past three days with antibotics. Usually, I'm too late. His name is Gizmo, Gizzy for short.

However, this infection started right after I had cleaned his home, a ten gallon fish tank. Twice with hot water and soap. His brother, Jakie wasn't sick, but knowing if one is sick, he'll get sick. So he's been treated as well.

What could I give Gizzy for food? I've been thinking of chicken broth or milk. I had gerbils drink both milk, broth, and gatorade when they weren't interested in water. I'm sure he's hungry as he shows the signs of chewing up the keyboard and everything else like clothes buttons.

Answer
Use half milk mixed with water. This will help your gerbil gain weight. If you have given chicken broth before and it worked then use that, but I do know that half milk and water in the water bottle will help gain weight so they won't get so skinny. :-) Try sunflower seeds as well. Most rodents love sunflower seeds and my hamster will eat them up in no time. Sunflower seeds help them gain weight as well. :-) Good luck and keep me posted.
