My hamster is hurt!

Question
I have 3 dwarf hamsters and they are all brothers. Due to fighting I removed one from the cage. I was told by one of the experts to remove the one that was fighting over night, and re-introduce them the next day. So I did that this morning, and it was crazy! He pounced on one of the hamsters and it caused him to have a very very deep cut on the side. It was really bad, I got bit twice trying to remove them from fighting!! He was trying to kill him I think. I don't know what to do with the injured hamster, he seems fine. There is no bleeding, just an extremely deep cut, and missing fur around the ear. He is running, eating, and drinking normally. What should I do? Will he make it through the night?? Please help quickly! Thanks!!

Answer
Hi Ashley, sorry i couldnt get back to you earlier. i think we can safely say these boys wont be living together again. somewhere along the line there has been a shift in the hierarchy of the group and one or more of them dont like it, i can understand why you were told to remove and then reintroduce the trouble causer as this shouldve made him the most vulnerable, obviously not. you could try removing them all from the cage for a day or so and scrubbing out the tank, this will give a new environment with no scent on it from any of them, apart from this i would suggest keeping them separate as at the end of the day is it worth risking more injuries?? as for his wounds, i would give your vet a ring and ask if there is an antibacterial powder or anything you could sprinkle on it, keep him warm and quiet with plenty of food and water, he may seem all right at the moment but he may be in shock, please ring your vet and get him checked over if he gets worse, but i really dont think at this stage putting them all back together is a good idea. let me know how you get on with them, the best of luck, Jen
