Found Hamster

Question
Hello, I found a Hamster in my house this morning. It got in through a small hole and when we put it back outside it tried to again make it's way in. I have 2 cats one of which was playing with it when we found it (so I don't know if it was injured, but nothing that I can see). I have him in a box in the bathroom with some water and crackers. But his behavior is rather strange. He is hissing and sqeaking when you try to touch him. At one point he rolled over on his back and was hissing at me when I got close to him. I know he is probably really stressed but I don't feel like this is normal behavior. Although I do not have a hamster or have much experience with them. Although I do love animals and am a very gentle person. I have tried to give hime some space and would like to know if you have any suggestions.
It was very cold here this morning (40F) and he was shivering when we found him. I am sure he was a house pet either lost or released.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Liz

Answer
Hi Liz,

the bahaviour the hamsters is showing is very normal and just shows that he is very stressed and very scared at the moment - he will probably calm down in a few days but he will need to tamed and this will probably take a few months for him to become used to you and used to being handled.

You need to get him a proper hamster cage and also some proper hamster complete mix from a pet shop.

Kind Regards,

Tammy
