Greens for the hamster

Question
I just recently got a Syrian hamster, and I am wondering what type of greens I can feed him. Greens that I would have around my house; vegetables that I would have/eat.
Is it good to give him a good amount of greens? How much should I feed it of vegetables?
Is it true that giving them fruit is not as good because they have a lot of sugar?

Answer
Dear Chloe,
thank you for your question.
You can offer greens daily, the amount depends on the type of green and your hamster, you have to experiment a bit to find out how much he eats.
Syrian hamsters can have fruit, too, although most prefer vegetables and leafy greens. Citrus fruit contain too much acid and should only be fed occasionally or not at all. You can offer carrots (with greens), zucchini, cucumber, magold (chard), basil, dried stinging nettles, dandelion (flowers, leaves and roots), daisies, marigolds, chickweed, fennel, chicoree, celery, spinach, kale, apple, pear, strawberry, parsley, ribwort, rucola amd leaves and twigs/branches from apple or pear trees, hazel, beech, birch, willow and poplar. All plants you gather outside mustn't be treated with pesticides.
I hope I was of some help to you
Jennifer
