Question
We thought we had bought 2 male dwalf hamsters for our daughter, today we have discovered at least 5 babies, my husband last cleaned the cage on monday, they look quite new (pink with no fur).  We have been reading the net trying to find out what to do, do we have to take the male out as they seem ok together and as i said we thought they were both male, so dont want to take the female away.  Please help a.s.a.p. and give us any more tips you can think we need to know.............thanks

Answer
Hi Joanne,

The only thing you really need to do is make sure Mom has plenty of food (hard boiled egg, carrots, apple etc. along with her regular hamster food) and water. Mom will do the rest.
It is fine to leave the male in with the female, but you should consider that after the female has given birth, she will come right back into heat again and if the male is in the same cage, it is possible that she will become pregnant again (the female should really have at least 3 weeks rest before getting pregnant again) . This is a personal choice. Some leave the male in and some will remove him for a few days.
When the babies are 3 days old, they should have whiskers. By day six, they will grow body hair. Around 10 days old, their eyes will start to open. When the babies are 14 days old, it is safe to hold them and the cage can be cleaned again.
By day eighteen, they will be weaned and if you do not want anymore babies for awhile, you may want to consider housing the mom and her daughters in one cage and the father and his sons in another cage. This will keep them all happy.
When the babies are 4-5 weeks old, they are ready to go to their new homes.
