Gerbil alone?

Question
I'm a new gerbil owner as of today.  Everything I've read so far says that gerbils are social and should be kept in pairs or groups.  However, the gerbil that I have was by himself at the store, and had been separated from his cagemates because he lost his tail due to a fight.  They said he's been by himself for a month or two.  Since he's been by himself, should I (or can I) try to get a companion for him?  I want to do what's best for him, and I don't which would be more stressful - living alone or having to adjust to a new gerbil.  I've read about the procedure for introducing gerbils, and I realize it takes some time, and may or may not work.  What do you suggest?

Answer
Its going to be VERY hard to get him introduced to another gerbil now. Once they've been separated and especially store bought injured gerbils, then introducing a new gerbil can be practically impossible. My suggestion is to watch him, if he seems content to be by himself leave well enough alone. I have personally acquired gerbils just like yours who were alone, half tails and usually aggressive and never had any luck introducing them to another gerbil.

The tail thing too, its often a broken tail that is chewed off by the gerbil not due to fights but by being handled so much by their tails.

I wish pet shops adopted them in pairs so that none would be left alone but I guess that's just not possible right now. Good luck and if he seems happy, playing, digging and eatting I wouldn't worry about a companion.
