Question
I have one male Syrian hamster and one female Syrian hamster (ages: female, 3 months - male, 5 months) - I do NOT want to breed them. My question: How far apart do their cages need to be in order for them to not be stressed out by one another's presense? Also - will a hamster be comfortable in a room where there are several pet birds (some large birds and some small birds). Thank you

Answer
Hi Wendy,

Their cages should be at least an inch apart. Being they are male and female, there really won't be any stress between them. My male and female hamsters set side by side and they seem to enjoy looking at one another now and then.
Putting your hamsters in the same room as the birds would not be a good idea. This would cause them a lot of stress. Hamsters prefer a more quiet room. The less stress the less health problems for your hamster.
