Trimming gerbils nails

Question
Hi, I have two 5 to 6 month old gerbils who are female and they are very skittish. I have tried to clip their nails by myself and with my fiance but the gerbils wriggle and don't stay in one place. We have had them for 3 months and I think they are always going to be this way.

Both gerbils' nails look rather long but they don't seem to be having any trouble running around, digging, and eating. And I have tried to take them to the local vet but she doesn't usually work with small animals so she won't trim their nails. Is there a natural way we could help them trim the nails themselves? or anything else we can do? Thank you very much!

Answer
Hi Mary,

You shouldn't need to do their nails at all, they should be fine. You just need to make sure you provide wooden toys for them. Their nails will always feel scratchy and will seem a bit sharp but it is such a risk to try and trim them as they are so tiny and it can really damage them very easily! If you do decide you really want them cut the best advice i can give is don't do it yourself, someone with experience must do it!!
