Question
Hello, I have two hamsters and one is sick. I am not sure what kind of
hamster she is but I desperately need some advice. Her name is Moonbeam
and I have had her for about 3 months. Recently, her bottom has been
hugely swollen and red; since she has a white belly I noticed right off.
I cannot take her to the vet because I am short on cash, but I don't
want her to get sicker and die. She acts no different than she used to
but she has to be miserable. I change the bedding in their cage every 5-7
days or as needed and water everyday. Moonbeam's diet consists of only
dry food and it is the same mix as she was fed at the petstore so I
don't know what else to do to improve the environment. The cage is kept
comfortably cool and dry (a challenge in the heat and humidity of the
summer). I don't know what to do but hopefully your advice will help me
out. Thank you for your time!

Answer
Hello, try some ornacycline since you can't take your hammy to a vet. You can find it in the bird section of a pet store. He is having intestinal problems really badly. I can't guarantee you that your hammy will survive, because intestinal problems in hammy are really bad and without a vet visit they are hard to cure sometimes, but the Ornacycline is a antibiotic that helps with intestinal problems. Is your hammy having normal stools? If you don't notice any stool droppings give her a strawberry to chew on. You're doing everything you can, just try those two things and keep me updated on how she is doing please. Good luck and I hope she gets better.
