Gerbil Not Feeling Well

Question
My gerbil has recently stopped being active. He doesn't eat as much and simply sits in his cage. He went from a overally healthy look to a fragile small state. Sometimes he squeaks if you lightly pet him, and today he was "throwing up" and there was a snot bubble from his nose. What should I do?

Answer
Hello Mustafa,

How old is he? As they become older they tend to become a lot less active.

Is there any sort of draft getting in, or is he somewhere quite cold, because snot from the nose would suggest a cold, or respiatory infection. Sometimes if you listen to their chest (hold him against your ear) you can hear the breathing is not good, again another sign of a respiratory problem!
It could possibly be an allergic reaction to bedding, as there are dangerous oils in cedar and pine bedding, but a lot of brands don't say what they are made from!! You can use carefresh which is available in most major pet shops, and will be fine, however, if you have had him a while without problems then the chances are it won't be this!!

It may not be this, but i would recommend you get medical attention for him as he sounds as though he will need some antibiotics to clear it up!!
I would take him as soon as you can, as the earlier it is treated the more likely it will be to work!!

In the meantime the best you can do is make sure he is somewhere warm, has plenty of bedding and access to food and water! I would gently wipe his nose as well with a tissue just to make sure it doesn't get sore. Make sure to note the colour and thickness of this stuff so that you can tell your vet exactly what it is like!!

I hope this helps!

Feel free to ask again!!

Thanks,
Charlie.
