I got the shaving from a garage sale. The sellers said that their gerbils lasted 5 years for both of them and they used these shavings. The bag has a picture of a hamster, a gerbil, a guiniee pig, and a rabbit. It's half empty so the instructions are gone.

If it's got a picture of a hamster/gerbil/rabbit on it, then it must have been designed for them - in which case this should be fine.  My concern is when you get wood shavings from timber yards or farms - as you don't know if this is safe for small animals.
