Hamster Fleas

Hi I have a syrian pet hamster.One night when I watching him clean himself I noticed a small black insect that looks like a fly came out from the cage.Plese let me know whether if it has got any infections.If so please let us no what kind of medicine we should use.

hi ashlee,

first off fleas cant fly, they jump, and they jump so fast that you cant see them until they land. so it wasnt a flea. it probably was a fly, which means your hamster may be a bit smelly. dont worry though all hamsters can smell a bit so just make sure you are cleaning out his cage once a week with anti bacterial small animal cage fluid. but if you want to be extra sure, get some anti mite spray from the pet shop. spray your hamster, his cage, ball and toys. but avoid his eyes, nose and mouth.
