Question
hi i was wondering if i can separate a hamster from the mom when they are 2 weeks old? and also if she ate all but one does that mean she will eat him also?

Answer
Hi Marissa,

baby hamsters should only be taken from their mother when they are about 4 or 5 weeks old but they can survive away from the mother when they are about 3 weeks old - if they are taken away from the mother any earlier than 3 weeks then they will probably need feeding milk still - you will have to ask a vet which would be the best milk to feed them on.

The mother could have eaten the baby because it had already died and she was just disposing of the body which means she wouldnt eat the others if they are alive, or there could have been something wrong with the baby she ate, which people could not have known about.

The only other reason a hamsters will eat her babies is if she feels threatened by a strange sound or smell, so you should never disturb the nest before two weeks.  She also might be too young to have babies.

Kind Regards,

Tammy
