Question
Hi, i am considering getting a pair of gerbils as pets but have several questions before accutly deciding to get them...

What are gerbils like? can I handle them once or twice daily?

Are they jumpy like syrian hamsters? everyitme I pick up a syrian hamster in the pet store it flys out of my hand back into the cage.... I've never been able to ctach a gerbil... there always in tehre tunnles.

Will a ten gallon tank work for two of them?

do they make any noises? if they do are they noisey at night because they will be living in my bedroom.

Can I take the out in my hands or do I have to hold them over there cage?

How much tiem daily will they need from me for cleaning/feeding?

Answer
Hi!

Gerbils are friendly and can be handled a few times a day but it may take up to a week for them to get used to you. The hamsters are jumpy because they really haven't had any human contact and all they see is thi big hand coming at them so they get very scared. Gerbils are alot faster than hamsters but it will take just as long for them to get used to you as hamsters so it shouldn't be an issue.
A ten gallon is fine for two gerbils as long as you get a cover for the tank so they can't get out and put toys and a covered wheel in the cage with them.  G
Gerbils don't really make noises but at night they do move around. The biggest complaint people have about gerbils and hamsters at night is the wheel. However there are a host of "quiet" wheels you can find at most petstores that aren't as squeaky. However living with them as long as i have i actually find the noises at night comforting.
You can take them out of the cage once they are used to being handled but even then you still need to keep an eye on them because they can jump and run.
Daily all you really need to do is change the water and food and clean out any large clumps of soiled litter. But besides that clean out all the litter weakly and monthly clean the whole cage with mild soap and also clean the toys and wheels with hot water.
If you have any other questions please ask and good luck!!!
