Does my hamster have wet-tail?

Question
Well, I'm sad to say that Zoey died in her sleep last night. She was giving squeals of pain before she went to sleep. That was around 2:00 am (I stayed up to see if she was alright, she did look to well early during the day). I knew it was to late to get her to a vet, and I didn't have the money anyway. We returned her body to the pet store to get a free hamster. Before making my choice, I inspected the hamsters in diffrent bins. I selected a hamster from a bin whose other inhabitants looked healthy. I wanted to make sure that I didn't take a hamster that was sick or too young to handle the changes of a new environment. I took home a 2-month-old female with perky ears and is rather hyper. I followed your instuctions on cleaning the cage and moved Cinnamon (the new hamster, named because of her light brown color) into Zoey's old cage. I did want to ask you though, what is an appropiate age for hamsters to begin breeding? While I was staying up with Zoey last night, I researched a little more on hamster sicknesses. I read that breeding hamsters that are too young can caused them to get stressed, leading to wet-tail. I don't want Cinnamon getting wet-tail (my friend is going to give me some medication that will decrease her chances of getting it), but I do want to breed her with my cousin's other hamster(the one who didn't get wet-tail, because I heard that it can be passed through genetics.). I will give her some time to adjust to her new surroundings before introducing her to the other hamster. But is she too young? How old does she have to be?

Well, I haven't seen her eating, but my sister says that she saw her. She didn't drink much, and she nibbled on her food. She slept most of the day. My friend says that she bought some tablets that she put in her hamster's water and that in a few days her hamster was better. That was about 3 months ago. I'm going to the petstore to see if they have some tablets like those. Would that help? I'm on vacation, and my mother is not with me (I'm only 12). I don't exactly have money for a vet. I think the pet store we bought Zoey at has a vet or something. Would cleaning out her cage help until tomorrow?

-----Question-----
Hi. My little sis and I got a hamster and named her Zoey. When we got her, she was really hyper and energetic. It's only been about 3 or 4 days, but she's not herself anymore. She spends a lot of time sleeping and always has poop splattered all over her butt. I called my friend because she has a lot of experience with hamsters, gerbils, mice, and rats. When I asked her what was wrong with Zoey, she said, "She probably has wet-tail. It's nothing big, just get medication from the pet store and she'll be fine." When I looked online, wet-tail was something major. I asked my cousin as well, since they have a hamster that has lived for a long time. They said that their hamster (Zippidy) had had it. They said it was nothing major as well. Is Zoey going to live? We are taking her back to the pet store to have her checked, but does she have wet-tail?

Hi Yesenia,

First, wet tail can be very serious and the medicine you can buy at pet stores does not cure wet tail, it only helps with the symptoms.
Is Zoey eating and drinking well?

Hi Yesenia,

It is really hard to tell if a hamster has wet tail or just diarrhea. This could have been caused from a change in her diet. Also when you first get a hamster, for the first few days, you should leave her hamster alone to give her a chance to get used to her new home and surroundings.
What I would suggest is this, First, go ahead and clean her cage. Do this with diluted bleach ( a half cup of bleach and 2 cups of hot water ), this will help kill any bacteria.  Also clean her food dish and/or water dish/bottle. If you go to the pet store and find the tablets, it is all right to give them to her, just follow the directions on the bottle.
I really think that the diarrhea is from diet change and Zoey just needs time to adjust to her new home and her new food. I would give her another week. Hamsters generally sleep during the day and are most active at night, so there is no need for concern on that part.
If Zoey seems to be getting worse, not eating, drinking or becomes lethargic (not moving around ), then your best bet would be to take her to a vet.

Answer
Hello again Yesenia,

I am so sorry to hear that Zoey passed away.
Yes, Cinnamon is too young right now to be bred. She should be at least 4 months old before breeding her.
You said that Cinnamon has perky ears and rather hyper. These are good signs. You should also check her body for bumps or lumps, make sure there is no discharge coming from her nose, check her bottom to make sure it is clean and not dirty, for these are signs of an unhealthy hamster.
I wish you and Cinnamon the best and if you have anymore questions, please write again.
