Fur loss

Question
Hi Kelly I have asked you alot of questions throughout having a pet hamster so I hope you don't mind me asking another one!
My Hamster is white and she is losing a lot of her fur. She has got a bald patch on her back and also at the top of her back. A couple of weeks ago I started using hamster litter instead of soredust but I have gone back to soredust now and i'm not sure if the soredust has made the bald patches even more. It might be just the temperature dropping but i might take her to the vets next weekend just to be on the safe side. Im not sure what to do and I just needed some advice from you!
thanks Kelly!! love Ali x x

Answer
Hi Ali,

There are a couple of possibilities:

1. Hamsters molt in the summer, and you'll notice their fur has become sparser; sometimes there will be bald patches.  This is nothing to worry about, because the fur will grow back.  However, to help the fur grow back sooner, you can add hamster vitamin drops to your hamster's water.  (Check the bottle of vitamin drops for specific instructions.)

2. Your hamster may have developed a skin allergy to the soredust.  In fact, I would strongly advise that you stop using the soredust, as it can cause respiratory problems.  Use hamster litter or unscented cat litter instead, along with Aspen or Carefresh bedding.

3. Your hamster may have mites.  Sometimes, if you smooth the fur back, you can see little black dots running on the skin.  Pet stores sell anti-mite spray for small animals.  Shield the hamster's head while you spray her body with the anti-mite spray.  Then, clean the cage and spray it with the anti-mite spray, as well.

If your hamster begins showing other signs of illness, such as lethargy, then she should be taken to the vet.

Have a great weekend!

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask :)
