Do Gerbils grieve?

21 11:34:04

Question
I had 2 gerbils for the past 2 years. One of them just died - I think she had had a stroke over the summer (she was walking funny and her head was to the side) She recovered from that, but a few days ago, she was twitching again, and died. Her cage buddy seems sad. Can gerbils grieve? What can I do to help her? Is she more likely to die soon because of losing her buddy?

Answer
Hi Sarah,

I do not know if they grieve as such, but she will realise she has gone, and will most likely become lonely. Unfortunately there is not all that much you can do to help apart from give her plenty of attention yourself and give her lots of things to do and play with. Have you cleaned the cage since your other one passed away? This will remove her scent which may help you existing gerbil!!
Your gerbil should be ok, as long as she doesn't become stressed. If you notice her constantly sleeping or lookin unwell (scruffy coat, not eating etc) then take her to a vet. For now though just keep an eye on her!!
