Hampster illness

Question
We just got our two hamsters for Christmas and were told at the pet store that hamsters can catch some colds from humans, some of the children have the flu or a cold and my oldest daughter is paranoid that they are going to make the hamsters sick is this true?

Hi Jen, it is true that hamsters can catch colds from humans, as bizarre as it sounds! dont worry just stop the poorly kids from handling the hamsters while they are ill and make sure everyone washes their hands before and after handling them. as long as the germs are not sent directly through the sides of the cage they should be fine, i have had many a cold whilst I've had hamsters and they have suffered no ill effect, you just have to be a little more cautious. dont let the kids worry though!! hope this helps, Jen
