Hamster Constipation

Question
Hello,
I think my Teddy Bear hamster is constipated and I was wondering if you know what I should do?

Answer
Hi Ashley

You could try giving some lettuce - this can cause diarrhea if too much is given, so it would be worth including some of this in his diet. You should also give good fibrous vegetables such as peas, sweetcorn etc.

Have a look at his rear to see if it is clean or dirty - also look for any blood if he is straining.  In severe cases a vet would need to treat, but it is worth trying a natural approach to begin with. Is there any sign of his dirts in the cage?  Hamsters can be very clean and keep them all together in the nest - in the wild hamsters might eat their own faeces to get extra nutrients if there is a shortage of food, and therefore many leave them at the bottom of their nest, rather than use a particular corner of the cage for them. Sometimes, therefore it is difficult to know if the hamster's bowel movements are normal - but if there is constipation it does need addressing. If left untreated the hamster can strain so much to go to the toilet that they can cause a prolapse of the intestines, and this can be very serious.

I would suggest modifying his diet - avoid giving eggs, cheese or other high protein food - just give the standard hamster mix and a good selection of vegetables and see if this makes a difference.  If it does, then phase out the fresh vegetables slightly but it is always good to give a little every night anyway.  If there is no improvement, if he clearly is showing signs of constipation - if he looks unwell, if there is any sign of blood from his rear, then I would advise you get a vet to check him out.

Regards
Sheila
